Letters: Festivals boost

In my neck of the woods all is very well indeed (UK festivals: has the bubble burst, 16 September). We look after about 120 festival members who are reporting extremely good business and doing well. There have been many new festivals to replace those that have fallen by the wayside ? some just retired, some found the economic climate a bit too tough. None from our association have gone bust.

Plans are already well under way for 2012, when the population is expected to swell to watch the Olympics. The festival scene will be ready and waiting to provide alternative festival-style entertainment. Planning and the exchange of ideas will again be celebrated at the AFO conference in November. Festivals are clearly where people want to be in the summer months. We play our role in the UK economy and just from our sector alone we contribute at least 82m to the national economy each year. Multiply that against the vast number of festivals in the UK and we are a serious player in economic revival.
