Ireland upset Australia as Rugby World Cup moves up a gear

No kiss and make up for Floyd Mayweather; Jamaica leave the world behind; Anzhi put price on midfield pair

In a sport where upsets are as rare as un-cauliflowered ears Ireland's 15-6 Group C defeat of second favourites Australia at the Rugby World Cupmade for a historic reverse, and a result described by the Aussie press as "embarrassing" and a "disaster". England, struggling to emerge from a tabloid brouhaha involving Mike Tindall and a drunken night out at a local dwarf-throwing contest may draw succour from the fact Ireland had previously been beset by a tabloid booze scandal of their own.

Ortiz sealed with a kiss

Extraordinary antics in Las Vegas as Floyd Mayweather took the WBC Welterweight title from Victor Ortiz. Mayweather was narrowly ahead when Ortiz butted him in the fourth round, offered a kiss by way of apology and was laid out before he could regain his guard. As the crowd booed HBO interviewer Larry Merchant had an altercation with Mayweather that ended with the 80-year-old saying "I wish I was 50 years younger and I'd kick your ass". Mayweather spent his post-match interview tearfully name-checking his entourage. Boxing: a painful sport in so many ways.

World eats Jamaica's dust

Sprinting's Jamaica-powered golden age continued at the Diamond League meeting in Brussels, where Yohan Blake ran the second fastest 200m of all time, winning in 19.26 seconds. "I'm like a beast. I just take it out on the track," Blake said afterwards. A beast, it ought to be pointed out, who runs in a pair of shiny rubber hotpants. The only man to have ever run a quicker 200m, Usain Bolt, won the 100m in 9.76, the fastest time this year.

Anzhi target midfield pair

Football's big guns continue to thunder: Manchester United's 3-1 defeat of Chelsea made it five out of five in the league. Barcelona beat Osasuna 8-0 in La Liga. And Anzhi Makhachkala of the Russian Premier League continue to make waves. Anzhi are now attempting to sign Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard, a pairing best known for ten migraine-inducing years in an England shirt demonstrating all the natural chemistry of an instant coffee advert romance. Proof that money can buy you everything except a conclusive selection of YouTube clips.
