Talking Horses: The latest news and best bets in our daily horse racing blog

The latest news and best bets in our daily horse racing blog, plus your chance to win tickets to Ripon's big day in our weekly tipping competition

Today's best bets, by Will Hayler

Despite the fact that it's been taking place on my doorstep, other engagements have kept me from making from an appearance at the Yorkshire Summer Racing Festival so far. But I'll be putting things right tonight with a stroll across to the Knavesmire for a typically tough-looking evening card, followed by an post-race performance from Blondie.

Debbie Harry will be doing well to live up to Madness' show after racing 12 months ago, but we live in hope. As long-time readers will know, the star turn I had been most looking forward to seeing tonight was actually that of my old friend River Falcon, but sadly he's a non-runner.

Ian Williams must be looking forward to the evening too, as there has already been a lot of money for his Another For Joe (6.00) in the opening contest. He was disappointing at Chester last time, but if there was any track at which you'd be prepared to forgive one bad run it would be the tight turns of Chester, and Williams is a past master at landing a punt. The consistent Save The Bees is closely matched with Roninski on their latest running, and that pair should give Williams' runner the most to do.

Myplacelater (7.30) has shown little in two starts this season, but she comes down in grade to line up in the Listed fillies' race and looks overpriced at 14-1. On her second to Crystal Capella in a Group Two at the end of last year, she'd be a leading contender, and she will appreciate it if the likes of Sajjhaa and Rainbow Springs cut out a decent early gallop.

Eightfold (6.10) shaped with considerable promise first time out when third at Salisbury and should do better with that experience under his belt at Newmarket this evening, where the Scissors Sisters provide the post-racing entertainment, if you're in to that kind of thing. I hope they've relaxed the dress code to allow spandex, or there could be awkward scenes at the entrance.

Keys (3.55) will take the beating in the Brown Jack Handicap at Ascot, but L Frank Baum isn't without a chance at much longer odds, particularly if any further rain arrives.

Rain won't hinder the chances of Point North (4.30) either, as he impressed on soft ground last season. Point North saw too much daylight as his rider tried to edge across to the favoured stands' side when mid-division in the Hunt Cup on his latest start. But it spoke volumes that Jeremy Noseda was prepared to pitch him in at that lofty level and he should be happier back down in grade and returned to a mile and a quarter.

Tipping competition, day five

As jaygee1 slowed up in front, zizkov123 waltzed into second by picking Flaxen Lake (7-1) and Mountain Range (9-2), a double also achieved by Yorks123. Carl31 was among those to pick Sansili (17-2).

For today's thrilling climax, we'd like your tips, please, for these races: 4.30 Ascot, 4.55 Thirsk, 5.05 Ascot.

This week's prize is a pair of Club enclosure tickets to Ripon for the Great St Wilfrid Handicap on Saturday 13th August. Those of you who don't win can buy tickets here.

As ever, our champion will be the tipster who returns the best profit to notional level stakes of 1 at starting price on our nominated races, of which there will be three each day up until Friday. Non-runners count as losers. If you have not joined in so far this week, you are welcome to do so today but you will start on -12.

In the event of a tie at the end of the week, the winner will be the tipster who, from among those tied on the highest score, posted their tips earliest on the final day (today).
