Planet Sport: LA Laker parks his way into big trouble

Danish racer hits cow corner; Nigeria's controversial takeaway; Bremen striker in silicone storm; footballer-loving model pulls on her boots

An investigation by the Los Angeles television channel NBC4 into the use of disabled parking bays by able?bodied drivers has found a high?profile miscreant in the shape of the LA Lakers centre Andrew Bynum. Footage showed Bynum, who has a salary of 8.5m a year, parking his BMW straddling two spaces, one reserved for disabled drivers and the other for the loading and unloading of disabled passengers, before going shopping. This came two months after a reader of the LA Times sent the paper a photograph of Bynum's car parked in a disabled bay outside a bank. Still only 23, Bynum ? who this week donned a Manchester United kit to have his picture taken with Amir Khan ? is no stranger to controversy: two years ago, while unable to play basketball because of a knee injury, he was caught carrying a bikini-clad woman on his shoulders around the Playboy Mansion in LA while wearing a green smoking jacket and slippers. In 2008 the then England football captain, John Terry, received a 60 fine for parking his Bentley in a disabled bay while he had lunch.

Danish rider hospitalised from cow corner

A Danish cyclist competing in the Brixia Tour of Italy broke his collar bone and suffered concussion on Wednesday after crashing into a herd of cows that had strayed on to the road. Martin Lind, a 20-year-old who races for the Christina Watches team, told the Associated Press that he was riding downhill at nearly 40mph when "two cows, or bulls, just came in from the side", knocking him unconscious.

Ghana: Nigeria pay price of controversial takeaway

The Ghana Football Association has explained the mysterious package that the Nigeria team found in their dressing-room before the second leg of their All African Games qualifier two weeks ago, reports the "It was embarrassing for us as a country to make such a mistake," said Abbey. "If juju [magic] worked, the country would be winning the World Cup by now. I find it a bit outrageous that people in this modern world want to blame [magic] for their defeat." Ghanaian Chronicle.

Nigeria's 3-1 first-leg advantage was overturned by a 2-0 defeat in Kumasi after which their captain, Kingsley Udoh, blamed their performance on black magic, transmitted through the strange object. But this week Randy Abbey, a spokesman for the Ghana FA, revealed what the object was. "The thing is that somebody had eaten food in a takeaway pack and left it in one of the lockers, presumably the last time the stadium was used, and the cleaners didn't do work well enough by cleaning it, so it attracted fungi," he explained. "That was what the Nigerian team saw. It is just an issue of negligence in relation to who was supposed to clean the place."

The Nigerian team turned down the chance to use an alternative dressing room, choosing instead to change in the corridor. "It was embarrassing for us as a country to make such a mistake," said Abbey. "If juju [magic] worked, the country would be winning the World Cup by now. I find it a bit outrageous that people in this modern world want to blame [magic] for their defeat."

Austria: Silicone wish gets Bremen striker in trouble

The Austrian magazine Seitenblicke this week published an interview with the 22-year-old Werder Bremen striker Marko Arnautovic, "so far most renowned for his bad behaviour and eccentric lifestyle", that set out to discover "what really makes him tick". In it he admits that, although he is currently going out with a blonde dental assistant from Bremen, he is "not really in love", and that his ideal woman "must be tattooed, have black hair and silicone breasts". After highlights of the interview were widely republished in the German media, and quite possibly following an angry interjection from his girlfriend, Arnautovic put out a statement on his official website saying the quotes were "falsehoods ... that are far from any truth".

So Seitenblicke decided to release a recording of the interview with Arnautovic. The player has released no further comment.

Croatia: Another big week for women's football

After the successful World Cup, there's been more good news for the profile of women's football after the Croatian underwear model Nives Celzijus was signed by the men's football team Slaven Belupo, reports the Croatian Times. Celzijus shot to fame two years ago when she revealed that she and her husband, the Croatia international defender Dino Drpic, had, er, enjoyed each other's company in the centre circle of his then team Dinamo Zagreb's home ground, causing a scandal that resulted in Drpic being transferred to Germany. Celzijus has recently published a book, In Bed with Cristiano, about her romantic exploits with footballers, and in May released a suggestive football-themed song called Goal, whose lyrics included: "Goal, goal, goal, score me a goal. I'm naked, you are naked, score me a goal" and suggested that listeners "fill me like Ronaldo". Celzijus was due to make her debut against Zagreb in Koprivnica on Friday.
