Ben Stiller to direct and star in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

Actor follows Owen Wilson, Mike Myers and Sacha Baron Cohen in list of stars linked to remake of 1947 comedy

Ben Stiller's next directing project will be a remake of The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, says Twitch.

Stiller, who signed on to star in the film back in April, is the latest in a long list of stars linked to the project since producer Samuel Goldwyn Jr mooted the idea of a remake in 1994. Jim Carrey, Owen Wilson, Mike Myers and Sacha Baron Cohen were all rumoured to be involved before Stiller.

The original 1947 comedy, which was based on a short story by satirist James Thurber and starred Danny Kaye as Mitty, focused on a pulp-fiction writer who fantasises that he is the hero of his books. His dreams become reality when he meets Rosalind van Hoorn (Virginia Mayo), a character from the fictional world who is being pursued by a gang of jewel thieves. Boris Karloff played the gang's leader, a sinister psychiatrist who wants to get rid of Walter by "curing" him.
