Roger Ebert backs down over Ryan Dunn drink-drive Twitter comments

US film critic admits he may have been 'too quick to tweet' following the death of the Jackass star in a car accident

US film critic Roger Ebert has admitted he may have spoken too soon when he took to Twitter with anti drink-drive comments following the death of Jackass star Ryan Dunn in a high-speed car smash.

Dunn and his passenger died after the former's Porsche 911 hit a tree and burst into flames in West Goshen, Pennsylvania, in the early hours of Monday morning. A coroner yesterday said the men were killed by the impact of the smash and the resulting fire.

Ebert, who had earlier tweeted: "Friends don't let Jackasses drink and drive", appeared to backtrack over his comments following a backlash from his followers and fans of Dunn, who starred in all three Jackass movies as well as the MTV TV series which spawned them. In a blog post for the Chicago Sun-Times he admitted he may have tweeted too soon, but said he stood by his comments.

"I don't know what happened in this case, and I was probably too quick to tweet," wrote Ebert. "That was unseemly. I do know that nobody has any business driving on a public highway at 110mph, as some estimated ? or fast enough, anyway, to leave a highway and fly through 40 yards of trees before crashing. That is especially true if the driver has had three shots and three beers. Two people were killed. What if the car had crashed into another car?"

Ebert's comments about alcohol consumption were in response to a photograph posted by Dunn showing him drinking several hours before the crash. Jim O'Brien, the manager of Barnaby's pub in West Chester, Philadelphia, told the Philadelphia Inquirer that Dunn was with several friends at the bar but didn't appear drunk. Other reports have suggested that he drank three light beers and three shots at the pub. A police report cited speed as a contributory factor in the accident but did not mention alcohol.

Dunn's friend and Jackass co-star Bam Margera was among those to criticise Ebert for his comments. He wrote on Twitter: "I just lost my best friend, I have been crying hysterically for a full day and piece of shit roger ebert has the gall to put in his 2 cents."

He later added: "About a jackass drunk driving and his is one, fuck you! Millions of people are crying right now, shut your fat fucking mouth!"

A spokesperson for the Chester County coroner said yesterday that toxicology results on the death of Dunn and his passenger Zachary Hartwell, a production assistant on the second Jackass movie, would take four to six weeks to complete. A preliminary examination of the crash site suggested Dunn's Porsche may have been travelling at more than 130mph in the 55mph zone when it jumped a guardrail, flew into a wooded ravine, struck a tree and burst into flames.

Mourners placed flowers and took photos at the accident scene in West Chester, while many took to Twitter or Facebook to offer their condolences to the families of the two men.
