Skiwatch: Spring conditions across the Alps

There are spring conditions across the Alps; the best skiing remains on high. Italy has the most snow. More than 100cm of new snow has fallen in Utah (US), 94cm in eastern Sugarbush and up to 50cm in Canada. Scottish resorts had heavy snow yesterday and strong winds should abate today so lifts can re-open.

French skiing has been highly enjoyable in the sun, despite the lack of new snow. The Ski Club of Great Britain reports ideal skiing on the Grands Montets (Argentire, 5-190cm, soft pistes, soft moguls). Higher pistes are still good in Avoriaz (100-160cm).

Best Swiss resort this week is Saas Fee (59-241cm), with flattering soft snow. Pistes in Klosters (15-139cm) are hard-packed, but still good for carving.

Italy has more snow and colder temperatures, providing good cover in Livigno (61-191cm) and Cervinia (60-200cm). Austrian Slden (10-246cm) had a dusting of new snow. Mayrhofen (0-60cm) is best on upper slopes early in the day. Ischgl (20-120cm) is largely unaffected by spring.

There will be fresh snow this week in France, Italy and Switzerland, heaviest in the west. Italy will hold the snow best in cooler temperatures while Austria is expected to miss out on fresh falls.

Phenomenal amounts of new snow (200cm) are forecast for Canadian Whistler, down to a freezing level of 800m. Colorado (US) will be milder, as will eastern Stowe before temperatures drop to -10C on Monday.
