Letter: The Tressell trail

Tony Benn commemorates the 100th anniversary of the death of Robert Tressell (An antidote to despair, 3 February), saying "this book [The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists] should be read and studied by this generation if we are to make progress, for there is no other way". A section of my website has a new biography of Tressell and an analysis of how "fictional" characters, places and events in his book were often actual reality in Edwardian Hastings. Many of his locations still survive, as does much of the deprivation, for Hastings is one of the poorest towns in southern England and will suffer badly from government cuts.
