Insurer Unat Direct says it has no record of my accident policy

I took out an accident plan 12 years ago, and have paid my premiums, but the insurance company denies I have a policy

I took out a personal accident plan in 1998 with AIG, which became Unat Direct, and paid the premium every month. Last summer, I rang Unat to check a detail of my cover, only to be told it had no record of the policy. I have been trying for the past six months to establish with them that my policy exists, but they keep losing my letters. Having received no reply to my initial letter after seven weeks, I terminated my direct debit payment. RS, London

This is embarrassing for Unat. You quoted the policy number and produced the certificate of insurance yet still the company couldn't find your policy, for which it had been taking premiums every month for 12 years. It has now made a more thorough search and discovered your policy is administered not by Unat Direct but by Chartis, which owns Unat, which is in a different system. This should have been checked when you first inquired.

Because of the error, Unat (or Chartis) will reinstate your policy with no break in cover and waive the premiums for November 2010 to February 2011 as compensation. It is also sending you a copy of the policy documents.
