NME awards: My Chemical Romance win twice as music's stars come out

Gongs also go to Laura Marling and Arcade Fire, while Muse take Best British band for the fourth year running

Beloved of mascaraed emos the world over, goth rockers My Chemical Romance triumphed moodily taking home two prizes at the annual NME awards. The New Jersey outfit were crowned best international band, and also took the award for best video for Na Na Na (Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na).

For the fourth successive year stadium rockers Muse were also winners, walking away with best British band having seen off Arctic Monkeys, Foals, Kasabian and Biffy Clyro.

Laura Marling continued her winning run after picking up a surprise award for best British female at the Brit Awards last week, which saw sales of her acclaimed second album 'I Speak Because I can' leap as a result, moving from No 80 to No 21 in the chart. Last night at the Brixton Academy, she picked up a gong for best solo artist, seeing off challenges from starrier names, such as Kanye West. Scottish rockers Biffy Clyro followed a nomination for the Mercury award last year with a prize for best live band., won by Arctic Monkeys in 2010, and Muse in the two preceding years.

Electro-pop group Hurts, who performed their hit Wonderful Life took away the award for best new band, an honour previously held by Klaxons and MGMT. Canada's Arcade Fire following up a Grammy and two Brit awards with an NME award for best album for The Suburbs. Oxford quintet Foals were nominated for four awards, but took home only one ? best track for their song Spanish Sahara, while Crystal Castles accepted the John Peel Award For Innovation.

But it wasn't all about rock n' roll ? British rapper Professor Green picked up Best Dancefloor filler for his single Jungle; less of a shock was the naming of Glastonbury as best festival for the third year running.

Singer songwriter PJ Harvey performed tracks from her recently released eighth studio album Let England Shake after being given the Outstanding Contribution To Music award. But the biggest award of the night - the Godlike Genius award ? went to Foo Fighters' front man Dave Grohl.
