Kungsbacka Piano Trio
(Naxos)
Heard far less often than his string quartets because of their scoring, Haydn's late piano trios are marvels of lyrical subtlety from the period of his greatest maturity in the 1790s. The Kungsbacka Trio are embarking on a series, and this first volume includes the famous "Gypsy Rondo", dispatched with mirth, and some lovely movements such as the serene Allegro, ma dolce of the D major trio and the more severe Andante cantabile of the E flat minor trio; in the F sharp minor trio there's a version of a movement from his Symphony No 102. The piano leads brightly, the violin seems a little recessive, and the cello supports well: a sequence of superb music which leaves one wanting more of the series.
