Hala'Ufia banned for dangerous tackle

? Back-rower made dangerous tackle on Shane Geraghty
? Florian Fritz of Toulouse banned for three weeks

The London Irish back-row forward Chris Hala'Ufia has been banned for eight weeks for a dangerous tackle on the Northampton back Shane Geraghty in an LV Cup match on 29 January. Hala'Ufia pleaded guilty before a Rugby Football Union disciplinary panel and was suspended until 5 April. He will be able to play again on 6 April.

The panel chairman, Jeremy Summers, said: "This was a cynical and deliberate act of foul play aimed at taking out an opponent, with the player making no attempt to execute a lawful tackle or to intercept the pass. Expert medical opinion has clearly identified the risk of serious injury arising from offending of this kind. Because of that risk, an IRB [International Rugby Board] memorandum of January 21 made clear that tackles above the shoulder must be dealt with severely. This sanction reflects that direction. The player's poor previous disciplinary record was also taken into consideration."

Hala'Ufia, who will miss six Premiership matches, received a four-week ban in January 2010 for striking the Leinster lock Leo Cullen in a Heineken Cup match. In April 2010 he was banned for three weeks for a dangerous tackle on the Wasps fly-half Dave Walder.

The dismissal of the Leicester hooker Rob Hawkins, after receiving two yellow cards for foul play in an LV Cup match against Bath on 4 February, was deemed sufficient. He can continue playing.

The Toulouse centre Florian Fritz was banned for three weeks and fined ?15,000 (12,700) by a European Rugby Cup disciplinary hearing in Dublin. The 27-year-old France player was sent off in a Heineken Cup defeat by Wasps on 23 January.

Fritz was dismissed by the referee, Alain Rolland, for a dangerous tackle in which he lifted the Wasps wing Tom Varndell before driving him into the ground. Fritz also faced a misconduct charge after making a gesture towards the home support as he left the field. He contested the dangerous tackle but admitted making the gesture.

An ERC statement read: "After hearing submissions from both parties and considering all the evidence, the independent judicial officer, Robert Williams (Wales), upheld the red card. Mr Williams determined that the tackle had been reckless rather than intentional and he noted that Mr Varndell had suffered no injury. Mr Williams found that the offence was in the lower end of the level of seriousness for one of this type.

"Having taken into account all aggravating factors, including the need to deter other players from tackles of this nature, and all mitigating factors, including Mr Fritz's good conduct at the hearing, he imposed a suspension of three weeks. Mr Fritz will be free to play on Monday 14 February 2011. The independent judicial officer also upheld the misconduct complaint against the player, who apologised for the offensive hand gesture, and fined him ?15,000 plus costs."
