David Jason returns to BBC with his first comedy series in 20 years

The Royal Bodyguard will be actor's first new sitcom series since Only Fools and Horses completed its final run in 1991

David Jason is returning to the BBC for his first new comedy series in 20 years, since Only Fools and Horses.

The veteran actor is to star in BBC1 sitcom The Royal Bodyguard, about an ex-guardsman who is mistakenly put in charge of royal security.

Although Jason appeared in Only Fools and Horses Christmas specials until 2003, the last time he was in a BBC comedy series was when the show completed its final run in 1991.

Since then he has been best known for his drama work on ITV, where he played police detective Jack Frost in A Touch of Frost.

The crime series ended last year but he has also starred in other ITV dramas including Come Rain Come Shine last December with Alison Steadman.

Jason said of The Royal Bodyguard: "It will be good to have a laugh again. I am really looking forward to working with the very talented producer Jimmy Mulville, and working on a great comedy project with the BBC.

The Royal Bodyguard is being made by Mulville's independent production company, Hat Trick, and written by Mark Bussell and Justin Sbresni, creators of The Worst Week Of My Life.

It was commissioned by BBC1 controller Danny Cohen and BBC comedy commissioning controller, Cheryl Taylor and will begin filming in July.
