When the Coventry Building Society first said it wanted to take over Northern Rock, it was virtually ignored. Now it wants to launch a campaign to try to whip up enthusiasm by presenting a deal as a "remutualisation" of the Rock. That's disingenuous: taxpayers have put 1.3bn into the Rock and the investment shouldn't simply be handed to Coventry's members.
