Q&A: PAtrick Stewart

'Which living person do I most despise? If I answered honestly, every Manchester United supporter would come looking for me, so I prefer to remain silent'

Patrick Stewart, 70, was born in Yorkshire. He left school at 15 and worked as a newspaper reporter before joining the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. In the 1960s he began a long association with the Royal Shakespeare Company. In 1987, he was cast as Jean-Luc Picard in the TV series Star Trek: The Next Generation, and went on to star in several Star Trek films and the X-Men movies. His latest film is Gnomeo & Juliet.

When were you happiest?
A year ago, after only four lessons, skiing alone in the Sierras.

What is your greatest fear?
Lying on a road, dying, having been hit by a car and feeling really cross.

What is your earliest memory?
In my brother Geoffrey's arms as he pointed to a V2 going overhead.

Which living person do you most admire?
Geoffrey's widow, Alma.

What was your most embarrassing moment?
At two consecutive performances as Cornwall in King Lear, shouting, "What trumpets that?" a page too soon when Eric Porter as Lear was merely pausing. He never forgave me.

Property aside, what's the most expensive thing you've bought?
A drawing.

What is your most treasured possession?
That drawing.

What would your super power be?
Photographic memory.

What makes you unhappy?
Selfishness.

Who would play you in the film of your life?
Me, of course.

What is your most unappealing habit?
Slurping liquids.

What or who is the greatest love of your life?
Huddersfield Town Football Club.

Which living person do you most despise, and why?
If I answered, every Manchester United fan would come looking for me, so I prefer to remain silent.

What would be your fancy dress costume of choice?
I would never attend a costume party, nor would most actors I know. Costume parties are for civilians.

What is the worst thing anyone's said to you?
Teacher at drama school graduation: "You are a character actor, Patrick. The next 20 years are going to be tough." I was 19.

What is the worst job you've done?
Wild Geese 2.

What has been your biggest disappointment?
Gregory Peck not mentioning me when he won best supporting actor at the Golden Globes for Father Mapple in Moby-Dick. I played Ahab.

If you could go back in time, where would you go?
The first performance of Hamlet.

When did you last cry, and why?
Last week, watching The King's Speech. It was perfect.

What keeps you awake at night?
Sleeplessness.

What song would you like played at your funeral?
Rollin', by Randy Newman.

How would you like to be remembered?
For being funny, but I don't think that will happen.

What is the most important lesson life has taught you?
Put yourself in the other person's shoes.

Where would you most like to be right now?
At the top of that ski run.

Tell us a joke
How does the band know the stage is level? The drummer drools out of both sides of his mouth.
